I have been following with great concern, the case of Andrew Brown, Jr., who was shot and killed by police in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, on April 21. The Pasquotank Sheriff’s Department reports they went to Brown’s home to serve a drug-related search warrant. Witnesses say Brown attempted to drive away but was killed in a hail of bullets. Two sheriff’s deputies have resigned, one has retired, and seven have been placed on administrative leave as a result of the incident. The family’s demand to see the body worn camera footage of deputies was met with hesitance, followed by the family being allowed to see only 20 seconds of redacted video. The family reports that Brown was backing away to leave, with both hands on the steering wheel, and they feel that his death was an “execution.”
